Description of the artwork

The 1000-piece K andinsky puzzle of the work Yellow Red Blue was born from a composition by the Russian painter in 1925. The painting is kept in the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
The application of colors on the painting follows the primary hues, creating squares, circles, and triangles, giving rise to abstract forms. Finally, Kandinsky traces deep black lines that cross the colors and shapes.

This technique is used to provoke a deep thought in the person looking at the piece.

In fact, Kandinsky’s work Yellow Red Blue is divided into two halves based on the diversity of each side. The left side features rectangles, squares, and straight lines in bright colors, while the right side features darker colors in various abstract shapes.
These two sides show different influences and are intended to create different emotions in the viewer.

In the early 1920s, Kandinsky’s compositions appear structured according to geometric principles. In particular, yellow and blue are associated with sharp and curved shapes, respectively, contrasting with red, which, arranged within rectangular forms, emerges in the central part of the painting.

Kandinsky's Color Study

Kandinsky , in his works and during his long studies, sets out his theories on the use of colour.
His constant search for a very close connection between the work of art and the spiritual dimension.
The emotional effect of color is determined by its sensible, perceptible and sensorial qualities: color has a smell, a taste, a sound .

First, yellow : endowed with a vital, exuberant madness , a blind irrationality. It is compared to the sound of a trumpet. Yellow indicates excitement and joy.

Blue is the color of the sky , it is deep: when it is intense it suggests quiet , when it tends towards black it is highly dramatic, when it tends towards lighter tones its qualities are of reflection and inner research

Red , on the other hand, is warm , vital, lively, and restless. Energy is red, awareness, and strength. The lighter and more yellow it is, the more vitality and energy it has. Dark red is more meditative and profound.

The colors of Yellow Red Blue

In Kandinsky’s work Yellow Red Blue, the painter decided to divide the canvas into different zones based on the sensation he wanted to evoke in the viewer. Indeed, the yellow area on the left appears to advance, while the blue on the right produces an effect of retreat. The combination of simple visual elements creates effects of dynamism and spatiality in the work.

The yellow area is dominated by graphic signs forming the stylized profile of a man. It’s curious, however, to note how, when the work is turned upside down, the same signs create the face of a cat. On the right, after the red and blue areas, we find a very pronounced black line with a serpentine shape that, in a sense, “closes” the entire painting.

We find depth in blue. Blue’s vocation for depth is so strong that it becomes more intense and intimate precisely in the deepest shades. The deeper the blue, the more it evokes the idea of infinity, arousing nostalgia for purity and the supernatural. Blue is the color of the sky; if it is very dark, it conveys a sense of calm. If it plummets to black, it acquires a note of poignant sadness, sinking into a drama that has no end and will never end. If it tends toward lighter tones, it becomes indifferent and distant. The lighter it is, the less eloquent it is, until it reaches a silent stillness: white.

Abstract art in the Kandinsky puzzle Yellow Red Blue

If art can (or must) be abstract, it means that it must also be free from national pictorial traditions.
It is thus clear how Abstraction was able to present itself as a cosmopolitan, international and, therefore, universal art.

Kandnsdky art puzzles are not only a tool with which to enter the art of the Russian painter, but they are a magnificent means with which to discover a world of emotions and feelings.
