The Centre Pompidou catalogues this work as Untitled, with the attributed title First Abstraction, Watercolour. It gives 1913 as the creation date while recording inscriptions referring to 1910. This distinction matters for an image often presented with the earlier date.
The eye travels through marks, patches and intervals rather than one recognisable subject. Colour builds relationships while dark lines suggest direction and rhythm. Assembly invites attention to how these different elements create balance.
Wassily Kandinsky (1866–1944) was a leading figure in early twentieth-century abstraction. In Munich’s Der Blaue Reiter context, he explored colour and form as expressive elements in their own right. The Centre Pompidou’s account of the artist places this work within the European avant-garde.
Marks move freely without a regular grid, with pale space around coloured areas. Follow their visual movement without needing to recognise objects or people.
The original combines graphite, India ink and watercolour on paper. It measures 49.6 × 64.8 cm; the puzzle is a reproduction measuring 70 × 50 cm. These dimensions describe different objects.
Transparent watercolour and soft edges contrast with clearer ink lines. Notice how a patch and a nearby line reinforce or depart from one another. Pale spaces play as much of a role as intense colours.
Start with recognisable purple areas and black lines, then separate yellow, brown and grey groups. In pale areas, a small mark or tonal change may guide you better than the dominant colour.
The included reference sheet helps compare detail and the whole. Step back as sections grow to see the relationship between spaces, lines and colour.
