Fuji from Gotenyama at Shinagawa on the Tōkaidō belongs to the Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. The Metropolitan Museum of Art dates the Edo-period woodblock print, with ink and colour on paper, to about 1830–1832.
People and flowering cherries animate the foreground while Fuji appears far away. The stable mountain and small figures establish several levels of distance. Spring colour leads the eye towards water and the horizon.
Hokusai (1760–1849) created prints, paintings and illustrations throughout a long career. Fuji remains a recognisable reference across very different scenes, even when occupying little of the image.
The Tōkaidō places this view along a route; Gotenyama identifies the viewpoint. Read the landscape through relationships between location, distance and human activity.
Successive carved blocks transfer outlines and colours in a colour woodblock print. The British Museum describes the coordinated work of artist, carver, printer and publisher.
Cherry branches add fine lines against broader sky and water. Pink flowers draw attention near the figures; Fuji offers a simpler distant outline. Compare how these accents guide your view through the details.
Move from the foreground to people and buildings, then to the distant mountain. Defined outlines distinguish subjects while colour areas connect the landscape.
For assembly, start with pink flowers, roofs and Fuji’s profile. Sky and water require careful shade and shape comparison. The horizontal format allows the eye to travel between lively foreground and distant mountain.
