The Eight-Part Bridge in Mikawa belongs to Hokusai’s series of famous provincial bridges. The Allen Memorial Art Museum dates this colour woodblock print, or nishiki-e, to 1833–1834, during his mature Edo-period work.
Yatsuhashi crosses an iris-growing area associated with an episode in The Tales of Ise. The museum record notes the site’s poetic associations and Hokusai’s imaginative form. Landscape, literary memory and bridge structure meet in the picture.
Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849) explored subjects through paintings, prints and illustrated books. Here, the bridge organises both the landscape and the travellers’ route. Its angular geometry contrasts with trees and terrain.
Figures reveal its scale. Hats, clothing and small gestures vary along the route, inviting you to follow one section after another.
Nishiki-e means Japanese multicolour woodblock printing, as explained by the Victoria and Albert Museum. Carved blocks transfer outlines and colours through successive impressions requiring precise carving and registration.
In Mikawa, bridge lines divide and connect areas of water. Pale colours let this geometry stand out, while travellers’ silhouettes introduce small variations among repeated beams.
Compare the bridge’s changes of direction and beam angles to orient pieces and identify sections. Then work on figures, hats and recognisable landscape features.
Once assembled, notice how the bridge carries your gaze across the scene. Alternating built and natural forms create a rhythm connecting architecture, story and landscape.
