The 2026–2027 Brueghel exhibition in Milan, The Origins of Pictorial Genres in Europe, explores a painter family and varied subjects. Landscapes, everyday scenes and objects organise stories. Begin with a small gesture, then widen your view to the whole composition.

The exhibition’s theme: changing subjects

Palazzo Reale’s programme presents Bernard Aikema’s project, curated by Carlotta Striolo. Paintings, drawings and prints examine the dynasty’s contribution to genres, including landscapes, storms, still life, peasant life and battles.

Notice whether a figure, sky, table or group attracts your eye first, then distinguish its presence from its role in the composition.

A dynasty comprises several artists

Read each caption for artist, date and attribution. Puzzle Arte also distinguishes Bruegel the Elder and Pieter Bruegel the Younger in separate collections.

Similar themes and names do not make works interchangeable. Identify the artist before interpreting a detail.

Landscape and everyday life at different distances

In a crowded scene, describe one group’s gesture, then find the road or landscape boundary connecting it to the wider picture.

In a landscape, begin at the horizon and return to the foreground. Small figures can establish scale even when they are not what you first notice.

A detailed scene to assemble

Festivals, villages and architecture offer different assembly references alongside piece count. Look at their distribution: crowded areas need not make the whole picture uniform, while repeated groups call for finer comparison.

Catalogue reproductions let you continue the exercise. Article illustrations do not establish which paintings were loaned to Milan; use official captions and museum records for original works.
