Dalí and fashion in Milan approaches Surrealism through the body, clothes and objects. Images become wearable, accessories change function and photographs construct public personas. Follow artistic invention beyond familiar soft watches.

A route through different media and materials

Palazzo Reale’s presentation brings together paintings, drawings, photographs, clothes, films, jewellery and objects. Montse Aguer provides scientific direction, Laura Bartolomé Roviras curates, and Judith Clark contributes fashion expertise, in collaboration with the Fundació Gala-Salvador Dalí.

Consider what changes when an image moves from a painting to clothing that folds and moves. Both its construction and how we encounter it change.

Dalí and Schiaparelli: a reference for the dialogue

The Victoria and Albert Museum discusses Dalí’s collaboration with Elsa Schiaparelli through the skeleton dress, tears dress and inverted-shoe hat. These provide context rather than a list of Milan exhibition loans.

A familiar object remains recognisable while its relationship to the body changes. That displacement invites a question before it becomes decoration.

Look beyond the initial surprise

Identify the familiar element, what has shifted and the new relationship created. Scale, material and position affect interpretation alongside the subject.

In photographs, consider pose and framing. In objects, compare invitations to use with features making that use ambiguous. Careful description can approach the work without explaining every symbol.

From fashion to paintings reproduced as puzzles

The Salvador Dalí puzzle collection offers another encounter through pictorial reproductions. Familiar figures and objects enter unexpected relationships. The exhibition connection is thematic and through the artist.

Compare broad areas and fine details before choosing. An isolated figure and uniform background need different searches. Continue with Surrealist puzzles for other images.
