We chose Klimt’s Kiss puzzle to discover, piece by piece, the beauty of the Austrian master’s works.
Klimt’s work, The Kiss, is one of the paintings that best expresses the profound relationship between the Viennese master and the beauty and sweetness of his subjects.
In fact, Klimt, in his paintings, always revealed the profound research and majestic ability of the Art Nouveau technique and style .
The brilliance and magnificence of Byzantine art in Ravenna left a profound mark on Klimt’s stylistic expressions.
This stylistic period relates perfectly to the style of puzzles, so Klimt’s puzzles fully depict the full grandeur of the Eastern Roman Empire.
In fact, Klimt visited the Byzantine Italian capital twice during the early 1900s.
Along the streets of the city of Ravenna he experienced the splendour of golden mosaics.
In fact, it was precisely from that inspiration and his inherited passion for gold that Klimt created the two-dimensional, almost mosaic-like style for which he is still recognized to this day.
His subjects were composed of flat elements and plastic parts with tonal transitions , from opaque to brilliant. One of the works that best expresses the union between Klimt’s expressive aspects is, precisely, the very famous work The Kiss .
The painting was exhibited at the 1908 Kunstschau art exhibition where it received great public recognition.
In fact, “ The Kiss ” was considered the best work of the exhibition and was bought by the Austrian State for the Gallery of Modern Art.
The work could not fail to meet the approval of the spectators, for the passionate, yet delicate, celebration of the theme of love and for the flowery style , which conveyed a festive image of the world.
The image was by now dear to Klimt, who had used it twice in a symbolic key, in the finale of the Beethoven Frieze and in one of the panels for the Palais Stoclet .
However, this time, the representation alludes to nothing other than itself and the artist exalts a moment of intimacy common to every human being.
The couple is placed in an unreal space, designed to highlight the moment of ecstasy.
Klimt manages to depict in painting that ephemeral and fleeting moment in which man and woman finally manage to complete each other and coexist in love.
A strip of flowery meadow provides a visual anchor, while the rest of the background is rendered, in a technique Klimt also uses in the contemporary Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer , as a sky dotted with golden flecks.
Gold is the predominant color , chosen for the ivy that falls on the woman’s ankles, for the clothes and for the protective bell that envelops the lovers.
Its elegance and its mystical-amorous aura made Klimt’s “The Kiss” the artistic pillar of the Viennese Secession , a tangible expression of the taste of the Belle Epoque .
At the centre of the square composition, in a place outside of real space, the two lovers embrace and abandon themselves to a kiss.
The two figures are differentiated through the color scheme and ornamentation, where the black, white, and silver rectangles that appear in the man’s dress are replaced by wavy patterns, circles, and stylized bouquets of flowers in his companion’s.
The hands, as always, acquire a particular prominence and the gestures contribute to building the atmosphere of bliss of the work, which is stripped of sensual connotations to insist instead on the happiness and tenderness of the kiss.
Klimt’s aim is to glorify with the Kiss the triumph of the life-giving power of Eros , capable of overcoming differences and creating a chrysalis in which to live love.
The painting is a worthy manifesto of the style of Klimt’s “golden period.” The gold color, whose brilliance reverberates across the entire background of the canvas, eliminating the effect of spatial depth, dominates the love scene.
