In fact, thanks to this beautiful 1000-piece art puzzle by Akena, you can discover all the emotional strength and density of colors of the great master of post-Impressionist art, the Dutch master Vincent Van Gogh.

Sunflowers are a series of oil paintings on canvas created between 1888 and 1889. Among the painter’s favorite subjects, they are today among his most recognizable and well-known works among the general public.

In fact, Van Gogh, who had settled in Arles in February 1888, loved the place and his new “yellow house,” but he felt lonely. Finally, in the spring, he had the idea of inviting his friend Gauguin . Perhaps together they could establish a community of artists in the town , of which he and his friend would be mentors.

The Sunflowers series, the most famous, was born in this period of vitality and optimism, during the summer while waiting for the arrival of his friend.

Description of the artwork

For Van Gogh, the sunflower was more than just a flower. In fact, as you can see in the subject of Van Gogh’s Sunflowers puzzle , among their petals lies the southern sun, and in the three shades of yellow, a powerful message is hidden: to bring relief to troubled hearts.

The artist began painting a single sunflower in a vegetable garden and ended up with a work that became world famous: Vincent Van Gogh created five paintings featuring the same subject: Sunflowers .

I’ve been working on it every morning, from dawn onward, because the flowers wilt so quickly… I’d like to make a decoration for the studio. Nothing but large sunflowers. “.

Vincent wrote to his brother Theo, hoping that Gauguin’s arrival could represent the first step towards creating a new “association” of artists.

In fact, it was precisely in the South of France that Van Gogh created some of his most famous paintings between 1888 and 1889.

However, the most famous series remains undoubtedly that of Sunflowers in a Vase . This series was born precisely in these years of vitality and optimism. During the summer, while Vincent was anxiously awaiting Gauguin’s arrival, all his extensive study of colors and floral compositions was aimed at embellishing his guest’s room.

But, after the clash, which occurred on December 23 of the same year, in which Van Gogh threatened his friend with a knife and then cut off part of his left ear , Gauguin returned to Paris.

After that event the two painters never saw each other again, but they continued to exchange long letters and Gauguin asked Van Gogh to paint a sunflower painting for him.

Van Gogh self-portrait

His move to Paris in 1886 and his impact with the paintings of the Impressionists and Divisionists revealed to Vincent van Gogh a new world made above all of light and colour .

The instinctive sympathy for the Divisionist theory was the basis of the Dutch artist’s new way of painting.

Self-Portrait with Grey Felt Hat, one of the many that van Gogh created, dates back to the early months of 1887.
The jacket is treated with quick pops of color juxtaposed against each other.

The same is true for the face, where the modeling is achieved by varying the inclination of the many strips of color that follow a general radial and centrifugal arrangement. The background, based on shades of blue and violet, is also composed of medium-length brushstrokes. Indeed, these are arranged along one of the cartoon’s diagonals, moving from top right to bottom left.

The artist also exploits the juxtaposition of complementary colors here (for example the green lines and the red line between the lapels of the jacket).

The fixed, disturbing eyes, the compressed lips, the extreme thinness reveal in this self-portrait the unstable and almost elusive character of Vincent van Gogh, incessantly plagued by inner restlessness and torment.
