Description of the artwork

A truly marvelous figure of Italian Renaissance art is that of Alessandro Filipepi, known as Botticelli (1444-1510).

Botticelli is certainly the most majestic example of the lyrical taste of fifteenth-century Florence .
His conception is essentially musical and is expressed above all in the line. It is soft and darting with elusive movements, enclosing perfect forms, intertwining and creating rhythms that, at a certain point, appear more sonic than visual.

However, this prestigious play of lines does not take place on a static plane, but in a space, or better still: in an atmosphere, that is, in a lyrical spatiality.
The passage of light zephyrs, the restless throbbing of leaves, cupids and mythological tales.

Indeed, it is precisely this wonderful expressiveness of Botticelli’s form and line that brings to life and perfect figures that, attempted by another painter, would appear affected.

Botticelli does not lack a sense of volume .
It would be enough to look at the Uffizi Fortress , with its powerful volumetric setting despite the refinement of the details, to realise how he creates his figures in space.

However, the line prevails in him due to its expressive power : hence the particular importance that the hands have in Botticelli’s figures.
In this Fortress, for example, it can be said that the character of the figure is above all in the hands, nervous and energetic in these gestures yet careless, almost indolent.

The Birth of Venus and Botticelli's Mythology

The Birth of Venus , dated between 1484-86, is a tempera on canvas measuring 184.3 x 285.5 cm and is preserved in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence .

The painting seems to translate into images on canvas some verses of the poet and humanist Poliziano:

“True the foam and true the sea you would say
and the niche is true and the blowing of winds;
you would see the goddess flash in her eyes,
and the stars laugh around and the elements..”

The composition is perfectly balanced on the central axis where, on a shell, Venus , born from the sea foam, under a rain of roses is pushed to the shore by the breath of the winds Zephyr and Aura.

On the beach, a young girl awaits her, ready to dress her in a purple cloak. A gust of wind ruffles the goddess’s hair and seems to oppose the girl’s action, billowing the cloak in the air.
The seascape is rendered with sinuous lines that echo the profile of the body.

The nude Venus, inspired by classical sculpture in its pose, is constructed with a fluid line that highlights her profile. The harmony of the contours justifies the unnatural elongation of the figure. The colors are soft , uniformed by the use of a pearly egg white-based varnish and enriched by gilding (on the wings of the winds and on Venus’s hair).

The line and the lyrical narrative are already evident in this very famous early work by Botticelli.

Spring

Among the paintings with mythological subjects the best known is certainly “Spring”.
This large painting is a vast symbolic composition in which the artist sought to recreate a mythological vision. This vision is set in a fantastic landscape, both in terms of the way nature is expressed and the sense of mystery it evokes.

No action, just a slow rhythm of classically affected figures, Cupid, the Graces, Mercury and Zephyr, all pervaded by romantic melancholy.

The Spring, dated 1482, is a large tempera on wood, 203 x 314 cm, kept in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence .

The title was attributed based on Vasari’s description, “Venus being brought to life by the Graces, denoting Spring.” The figures in the panel have been identified with certainty, although the meaning of the work is not entirely clear .

The characters of Botticelli's Primera

Starting from the right, the wind Zephyr grabs the nymph Chloris and with his breath fertilizes her, transforming her into Flora, generator of flowers and of Spring.
The fruit-laden trees bend in the breeze; the flowers spilling from Chloris’s mouth mingle with those growing in the meadow, reproduced with meticulous care.

In the central axis of the composition, in front of a myrtle bush, a plant sacred to her, stands the solemn figure of Venus.
Above her, her blindfolded son Cupid is about to shoot one of his fatal arrows.

On the left, the dance of the Graces unfolds at a slow, melodious rhythm. These splendid creatures covered in transparent veils symbolize the love that is given, received, and returned.

Finally, the composition closes with Mercury, who, with his caduceus, touches the clouds: perhaps alluding to the presence of the divinity or keeping bad weather away from the garden.

The background is made up of the trees of the grove, beyond which, after the 1983 restoration, a bright landscape appeared, giving depth to the scene.

Botticelli’s allegory

There is, in a wonderful work like Spring, such a perfect fusion between poetic image, musical rhythm and pictorial form .

In fact, in this painting we could hardly distinguish the values of the lyrical conception from the pictorial ones: for example, the attention of all observers has always been attracted by that

Botticelli’s allegory has a very strong poetic value and is characterized by a subject connection and this is one of the few cases, in the history of painting, in which even the most formalist aesthetes were led to give their paintings a literary tone to the point of recognizing that

«this work transcends the laws of painting to cross over into those of poetry»
