Description of the artwork

Portrait of Jeanne Hébuterne is an oil on canvas painting made in 1918 by the Italian painter Amedeo Modigliani .
The work portrays the artist’s young companion, Jeanne Hébuterne, his muse and central figure in the last years of his life.

Modigliani devoted much of his short, intense life to portraiture . His subjects ranged from strangers he met by chance, to clients, to his closest friends.
With Jeanne, the bond is deeply personal and in her stylized features, her absent eyes and her elongated face, one perceives not only the sweetness of the young woman, but also the tormented and melancholic soul of the artist himself.

Modigliani was a nonconformist and reclusive artist . He developed an unmistakable style of art, featuring stylized human figures with elegant features, enhanced by intense, vibrant colors.
His expressive exploration breaks away from contemporary trends, finding an original approach that combines sinuous lines and bold colors. The transfigured faces in his works convey a melody of harmonious curves that convey the intimate and fragile humanity of his subjects.

In Jeanne Hébuterne, this poetics finds one of its peaks: the refinement of the deformation and the silence of the expressionless eyes become the profound language of a love and a shared tragic destiny.

“Life is a gift from the few to the many: from those who know and have to those who do not know and have not.”

From his numerous lovers he had two children, both unrecognized.
However, the woman of his life was Jeanne Hébuterne, also a painter and model, nicknamed “noix de coco” or coconut, for the beauty of her face and long brown hair.

Amedeo Modigliani met Jeanne Hébuterne in April 1917. Their passionate and overwhelming union lasted just under three years, during which the artist portrayed her numerous times.

The painting showing her wearing a wide-brimmed hat, which seems to isolate her from her surroundings and almost protect her, dates back to 1918.

The pensive pose that distinguishes her, with two fingers raised to her chin, is rendered melancholy by the tilt of her head, as in Botticelli ‘s paintings and drawings. Her pupilless eyes are two clear slits that reveal to the observer the inner life of Jeanne, a passionate woman and the artist’s sensitive companion.

Their relationship was so troubled and full of excesses that their furious arguments became famous throughout the neighborhood.
They had a daughter in 1918, also named Jeanne, whom her father, however, did not recognize. Two years later, as business began to improve, Modigliani agreed to marry Jeanne, who was pregnant with their second child.
