Description of the artwork

One of the most popular and reproducible paintings by the famous German avant-garde artist Franz Marc is The Blue Horse.

The painting from the Blue Horses series by expressionist painter Franz Marc was created in 1911, the same year Marc founded The Blue Riders (Der Blaue Reiter).

Marc and other artists in the group, such as Klee and Kandinsky, formed a circle of artists focused on the importance of color, expression, and symbolism. Marc showed some of his new paintings at the first Der Blaue Reiter exhibition at the Thannhauser Galleries in Munich in late 1911.

In “Blue Horse,” the artist used a large number of shades of blue, making the figure of a horse very powerful. The animal’s silhouette also exudes expression and power. Indeed, Marc Franz’s image cannot be treated neutrally; it necessarily evokes emotion.

Franz Marc was fascinated by the study of animals . He was fascinated not only by their anatomy and habitats, but also by their rich inner worlds.
Each painting of his animal subjects is deeply emotional . This is due not only to Marc’s extensive knowledge of animal anatomy, but also to his extraordinary use of color .
As Marc explained in a 1910 letter:

“Blue is the masculine principle, astringent and spiritual. Yellow is the feminine principle, gentle and sensual. Red is material, brutal and heavy, and always the color the other two must oppose and surpass!”

Indeed, looking at Blue Horse, the young male horse tilts his head, as if in delicate contemplation. He seems innocent and youthful.

Franz Marc chose animal subjects for his paintings because for him they represented innocence. Horses, above all, represented freedom and purity of spirit.
By combining animals with specific colors, he was able to convey these feelings to the viewer. The young horse in this painting seems to exist on a more spiritual plane than our own.

While Franz Marc’s art often depicted security, serenity, and spirituality, his life took a much darker turn. He was killed by a shell fragment in 1916 during the storming of Verdun, despite his fear and hatred of war.

The Blue Rider

In 1909, the New Munich Artists’ Association was formed in Munich, one of the most culturally vibrant European cities of the early twentieth century.
Marc himself was the first enthusiastic admirer of the paintings of the Neue Vereinigung, seeing in them a “totally spiritualized and dematerialized interiority,” that is, a feeling expressed in a highly spiritual manner. Furthermore, it was Marc again who in 1912 linked the name of the Neue Vereinigung to that of Die Brücke, defining the two groups as German Fauves .
However, in December 1911 the group split due to internal conflicts.

In 1930 Kandinsky explained:

The name, Der Blaue Reiter, was born to Marc and I, over a cup of coffee under the pergola in Sindelsdorf: we both liked the color blue. And Marc liked horses, I liked riders. And so the name came naturally. But we liked Frau Maria Marc’s fabulous café even more.

Unfortunately, the group was short-lived: the last exhibition was organised in 1914 and in 1916 Franz Marc died on the French front.
Finally, the First World War dispersed, with its unprecedented violence, the most lively group of artists who had contributed to the birth of modern art.

Like Die Brücke , the artists who gathered under the common denominator Der Blaue Reiter were against contemporary society—materialistic and non-spiritual—and, consequently, against Impressionism. Indeed, in this regard, Marc would argue that we must destroy, not reproduce, nature to seek the laws it conceals and not be satisfied with appearances. It is therefore necessary to paint the ideal, original, and essential form of things.
