Renoir and Love in London explores relationships through dances, conversations, gestures and shared moments. At the National Gallery, love extends to friendship and everyday life. Observe how distance, gaze and light construct an encounter before learning each character’s story.

The National Gallery’s programme
The official exhibition page focuses on Renoir’s work in the 1860s–1880s. Mentioned works include Moulin de la Galette, Mother Antony’s Tavern, Lunch at Restaurant Fournaise and Dance at Bougival. The project is organised with the Musée d’Orsay and Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
Ask the same question across different settings: which gesture connects two figures? A seated conversation and a dance can suggest closeness through different visual relationships.
A table and a dance: two ways to construct an encounter
Begin with figures sharing an object or space. A table distributes people along an edge; dancers suggest a shared direction. Follow hands, faces and surroundings. Their relationship need not involve direct contact.
Return to the complete image. Some gestures become clearer alongside another group, while others remain isolated. Different characters need not express the same emotion.
Light and background participate in the scene
Follow bright patches and shadows: do they cross clothes, separate figures or connect them to the setting? Notice where contours appear clearly and where they soften.
This distinguishes a subject from its pictorial construction. Similar gatherings can have different rhythms, group densities and relationships with open space.
Distinguish the London and Paris exhibitions
The Paris exhibition ended on 19 July 2026. Our article on Renoir at the Musée d’Orsay preserves its works and curatorial approach. Use the National Gallery’s information for this London visit.
A shared project does not make dates, rooms and listed works identical across museums. Refer each detail to its correct venue.
Find a scene in the puzzle collection
Explore reproductions in our Renoir puzzle collection. Choose an image you would enjoy observing over time: a crowd, shared reading or waterside scene. Compare its complete composition and edition specifications.
Piece count alone does not describe the visual task. Similar clothes call for attention to colour marks, while tables provide recognisable objects and edges. Assembly moves between a single gesture and encounters between figures.
