Frida at Tate Modern in 2026–2027 asks how an icon emerges. Frida: The Making of an Icon explores an artist, her objects and images others construct around her. Recognising a face is immediate; understanding who made a particular image and in what context requires closer attention.

Artworks, objects and later images

Tate’s official loan list documents clothes associated with Frida Kahlo, drawings and paintings, alongside later works about her. Examples include the 1931 drawing Retrato de Luther Burbank, Carlos Almaraz’s La resurrección de Frida and Barbara Carrasco’s Frida, tú y yo.

Distinguish Kahlo’s own works from tributes and personal objects. Read each label for author, date and provenance rather than attributing every image featuring Frida to her.

From a recognisable face to a particular image

Ask who made a portrait and which choices guide recognition. Pose, background, clothes and surrounding elements construct an identity without telling a complete biography.

Compare images by different artists: what remains similar, and what changes? Details, colours and objects can transform while the depicted person remains recognisable.

Read a personal object differently from a painting

A dress invites attention to material, workmanship and the body. A painting presents a surface whose relationships are arranged by an artist. Comparing them opens questions while preserving their different nature.

Choose two different objects and distinguish direct observations from information supplied by captions. Provenance and use add context that an isolated photograph cannot replace.

Frida puzzles: check artist and subject

Read each product’s details in our collection dedicated to Frida. A puzzle may reproduce an artwork or feature an illustration paying tribute to the artist. Titles and descriptions identify its particular image.
