Description of the artwork

The subject of the Tahitian Women puzzle is a painting executed in 1891. In fact, it is one of the first paintings that Guaguin made on ocean soil.
Furthermore, his composition will become a formula focused on the depiction of indigenous people and their daily activities.

In fact, this kind of painting presents itself as a lively antagonist to the violent practices of European civilization. In 1891 Gauguin ventured to Tahiti , in French Polynesia.
The French painter attempts to rediscover in the natives the uninhibited and childlike innocence of the human being and to describe it with an equally simple and natural pictorial grammar.

In Gauguin’s painting Two Tahitian Women , we see two Polynesian women sitting on the seashore. Their bodies are massive and solid. Their lustrous hair is tied back and adorned with splendid orchids. Their exotic eyes and Pacific features. However, more than their physiognomy, Gauguin was struck by their behavior: they are both wrapped in an enigmatic silence that is difficult to penetrate, as if they were following the invisible thread of their thoughts.

In fact, the subjects ‘ poses and movements appear ordinary and spontaneous : the woman on the left is leaning on the sand with her arm. The woman on the right, however, is nonchalantly weaving together leaves and branches.

To understand the painter’s Polynesian day feeling, Guaguin’s own words come to our aid:

«..To which each one, creating freely, can create an antecedent and a consequent»

The content of this work appears simple and almost banal, yet it rests on a compositional structure worthy of a great master of the art. Indeed, the structure is solid and stable.
The colours are not disturbed by strong chiaroscuro but are composed with extreme simplicity in the construction of spots and homogeneous areas.

The Tahitian Women's Puzzle Guaguin

Two Tahitians is a painting executed in 1899 , when Paul Gauguin was
to conclude his last stay in Tahiti and begin his brief stay in the Marquesas Islands , where he would later die. In it, two young women advance toward the viewer like ancient offerings.
Classical statuary, with its serene beauty, seems to be the ideal inspiration for the solid and well-proportioned modeling of the young women walking side by side.

One, with a bare torso and a long pale blue and purple dress, is seen frontally while carrying a container full of red fruits, the other, dressed in a light blue tunic tied on the left shoulder and with her right breast uncovered, turns her head towards the first and holds a bunch of pink flowers in her hand.

The gait and frontality are enriched by glances in two divergent directions: the young woman on the left turns her eyes to the left, the other, instead, to the right.

Finally, the background, with its broad patches of various shades of green, reveals shifts toward yellow, which, combined with patches of complementary violet, illuminates the left side of the canvas. A warm light, coming from the left, shapes the women’s rounded forms.

Paul Gauguin had already depicted this female group in Faa lheihe («Tahitian Pastoral»), a long, narrow, frieze-like painting, in 1898 and in Rupe Rupe , a work from 1899.
