Raphael painted splendid Madonnas throughout his career. During his Florentine period (1504-08), they clearly reflect Leonardo’s work, such as the Madonna del Prato and the so-called Madonna del Granduca, which belonged to Ferdinand III of Tuscany in 1800.
Towards the end of his stay in Florence, Raphael also became interested in Michelangelo’s new sense of dynamism, as he had already demonstrated in the altarpiece for Atalanta Baglioni and in The Beautiful Gardener.
Around the first decade of the sixteenth century, Raphael deepened his interest in Michelangelo, without at the same time abandoning a sort of underlying Leonardianism, visible in particular in the sweet and light grace that permeates his female figures.
This is the case of the famous Madonna of the chair, datable to around 1513, executed in Rome , perhaps the most popular of his Madonnas for the simple immediacy of the composition and its message of warm and affectionate humanity, of maternal love, accentuated by the gaze
intense that the Virgin addresses to the spectator.

The Madonna and Child with the Infant Saint John the Baptist, or Madonna della Seggiola, painted by Raffaello Sanzio between 1513 and 1514, is an oil on panel painting with a circular format with a diameter of 71 cm and is preserved in the Palatine Gallery in the Pitti Palace in Florence.
The composition of the Grand Duke’s Madonna is limited to just the two figures of the Virgin and Child. It is simple yet extraordinarily effective in depicting profound maternal affection, perceived as a universal theme, not limited to the subject matter. Indeed, Raphael admirably captured the dual nature, spiritual and earthly, of the protagonists: both are sacred figures, objects of worship and devotion, yet at the same time appear profoundly human, even in their physical proximity to the viewer.
The artist studied and understood Leonardo’s poetics of affection: note Mary’s thoughtful attitude, aware of the tragic fate that awaits them both, but also the natural gesture of the Child who leans trustingly on his mother.
The Holy Family with Saints Elizabeth and John the Baptist, dated 1507, known as the Canigiani Holy Family after the patron, presents the usual pyramidal scheme, made more complex by the presence of Joseph and Elizabeth: Mary’s elderly husband represents the highest point of the composition and is presented in a forced position, legs and shoulders turned to the right, trunk and head to the left, a position inspired by Michelangelo ‘s Doni Tondo .
The intense interplay of gazes, with Elizabeth turning her head upwards as if speaking to Joseph, the affectionate gestures, the sfumato of the faces and the aerial perspective are typically Leonardo-esque elements, which Raphael had by now completely metabolised.
