Christ Crucified Velázquez is a 1632 painting by Diego Velázquez depicting the Crucifixion. This work, painted in oil on canvas, measures 249 × 170 cm and is exhibited in a room of the Prado Museum.
Vezquez’s teacher, Francisco Pacheco , a great supporter of classicist painting, painted the crucified Christ using the same iconography later adopted by Velázquez: four nails, feet joined and supported by a small wooden support, in a classic contrapposto.
During his stay in Rome, Velázquez created several nude studies that he used in later paintings. Indeed, art critics say the nude study for this painting is exceptional and masterful, combining serenity, dignity, and nobility, the fruit of long hours of work.
This work represents a life-size frontal nude, without the support of a narrative scene.
Both arms form a subtle curve. The loincloth is painted rather small, thus revealing as much of the naked body as possible. The head features a subtle halo, as if emanating from the figure itself.
Her face rests on her chest, revealing just enough of her features. Her long, straight hair covers much of her face, perhaps prefiguring death.
Due to lack of information, the exact date of the painting is unknown.
However, historians believe that the work was created after Velázquez’s return from Italy, probably between 1631 and 1632. The influence of classicist painting is demonstrated by the calm posture of the body, the idealized face and the hanging head.
On the other hand, Caravaggio ‘s influence can be seen in the strong chiaroscuro between the background and the body and in the strong artificial lightning on the cross.
The Spanish Golden Age is one of the richest and most generous eras in art history, and of all the artists who contributed to it, Diego Velazquez is certainly among the most important.
Born in 1599, Velázquez was one of King Philip IV’s court artists and created a wide range of masterpieces throughout his career. Many of his paintings were portraits of 16th-century Spanish nobility.
With Christ Crucified, Velázquez took the opposite approach. The painting is spare and understated. There is no background, only a dark area with a few symbolic shadows to help emphasize the central figure.
The cross itself is simple and unadorned, the delicate details, such as the wood grain, only serving to emphasize the everyday nature of its materials.
Christ himself is equally unadorned. Velázquez makes no attempt to portray the agonies of Christ’s Passion and simply shows the Messiah’s head bowed.
Her hair flows, like blood, down her face.
The image is composed with geometric uniformity and clarity, a sober structure that provides a striking contrast to the meaning of the subject.
The spirituality and mystery of this painting have inspired many religious writings, most notably the poem El Cristo de Velázquez by the Spanish writer and philosopher Miguel de Unamuno.
