Among the dark works of Goya ‘s “adult” period, the marvelous paintings La Maya desnuda and La Maya vestida , dating from 1798 and 1800 respectively, are exceptions. These two paintings are a tribute to beauty and sensuality. It is not known for certain who the model was. However, some maintain that the body and face do not belong to the same person. In fact, the body of the woman portrayed belongs to the beautiful Cayetana, Duchess of Alba , with whom the painter was apparently infatuated.
Francisco Goya was one of the greatest Spanish painters of all time. His works demonstrated that there are demons hidden in the depths of the human soul that should remain in the shadows, but which in certain circumstances emerge with the force of a raging river.
Just as Goya himself will declare:
“It is war that manifests the true essence of the human soul .”
The essence of reality lies in the act of war, as during a war, always represented by artists through acts of courage and the soldiers’ bright uniforms.
Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes experienced the war personally.
For this reason we can divide Goya’s works into two periods that show posterity a completely different artist, in which it is difficult to understand the connection between the works of the young artist and the paintings of the mature one .
In fact, in the early period of his production we can find a carefree Goya, who does not know what physical discomfort and cruelty are.
Finally, an adult Goya , torn by life, now deaf, who saw war knocking on his door with its macabre burden of cruelty and violence and which opened up to him a world that was anything but candid and innocent.
Court painter from 1789 and married to his sister Bayeu, Goya’s life seems to proceed in the pomp and serenity of the privileged life of a courtier.
However, two episodes will mark a turning point in his existence.
The first episode occurred in 1792 when Goya fell seriously ill .
Death was almost certain, but the Spanish painter’s time had not yet come. In fact, Francisco managed to recover, but with a complete loss of hearing .
From this moment on his works become much darker, as in the case of the series of etchings called Los caprichos dated 1797 , among which the most famous is certainly the dream of reason generating monsters.
The second episode was the war. Indeed, the invasion of Spain by French troops in 1808 profoundly affected Goya’s life. The painter would never forget the horrors of war and the summary executions he was forced to witness. For this reason, in his war paintings there is no honor or heroism in the actions of soldiers and revolutionaries, but only violence and death .
Finally, proof of the violence of war is the series of engravings known as The Disasters of War, in which the conflict is portrayed in all its realism.
Now alone at over seventy years of age, the great Spanish royal painter decides to retire permanently to private life in a house in the countryside.
Far from everyone, the artist gives vent to his demons, frescoing the walls of the house with what have gone down in history as Las Pinturas Negras , among which the most emblematic is “Saturn devouring his children”.
However, two elegant and beautiful works arise from this dark period of Goya’s life: The Nude Maja and the Clothed Maja.
The Nude Maja is one of Francisco Goya’s best-known paintings.
It was created in 1798 and is a splendid oil on canvas measuring 97 x 190 cm and is currently exhibited at the Prado Museum in Madrid.
A simple portrait, devoid of any mythological references, of a completely naked woman reclining on a couch. It is likely the first nude without literary or mythological references ever created. It is not only a marvelous painting but also a small revolution in the very concept of beauty, which perhaps arose, according to some, from the artist’s own fascination with it.
In fact, the woman is portrayed in a seductive pose : her hands clasped behind her head , her gaze direct and provocative. The erotic content of the painting and especially the provocative attitude of the subject did not go unnoticed and led to the artist being summoned by the Inquisition . In fact, for this painting, Goya was questioned about the painting, its genesis, the reasons for its creation, and who had commissioned it.
