• History of the Munch Museum Oslo

    The construction of the Munch Museum Oslo, in Italian Museo di Munch, originated from the city’s municipal cinema and opened its doors for the first time in 1963.

    Its collection consists of works and paintings by Edvard Munch, which he donated to the city of Oslo upon his death.
    Additionally, the museum’s halls include other works donated by his sister Inger Munch.

    Today, the museum also contains sections dedicated to teaching and education and has facilities for performing arts.

    The Munch Museum Oslo’s permanent collection includes over 1,200 paintings, 18,000 prints, six sculptures, over 500 plates, 2,240 books, and various other objects.

    Among the main works, it is impossible not to mention Munch’s famous The Scream, the most famous example of expressionist art.
    This painting symbolizes the emotional quest and the tumultuous journey one undertakes in search of serenity.
