• History of the Detroit Institute of Arts

    The Detroit Institute of Arts, known as DIA, houses one of the largest and most significant art collections in the United States.
    A multitude of artworks created throughout Asia, the ancient Middle East, and the Islamic world.

    The museum’s first painting was donated in 1883, and today its collection includes over 65,000 works.
    With approximately 680,500 visitors per year, the DIA is among the most visited art museums in the world.

    The collection spans from antiquity to the present day and includes carved stones, cast bronze, painted ceramics, molded glass, exquisite textiles, religious sculptures, and refined paintings.

    The Detroit Institute of Arts is considered one of the top six museums in the United States with an encyclopedic collection from Africa, Oceania, and Indigenous Americas, from ancient Egyptian and European works to contemporary art.
    The latter includes over 3,500 paintings, videos, and installation-based artworks, sculptures, and handcrafted objects ranging from the 1950s to today.

    Among the most famous works in the collection are Detroit Industry Murals by Rubens and some of the self-portraits by Van Gogh.
