This fresco, also known as the Procession of the Magi, has long been considered the masterpiece of Renaissance painter Benozzo Gozzoli. Ostensibly a portrait of the Magi searching for the Christ Child, it is a dramatic demonstration of the opulence and grandeur surrounding the Medici family.
The portion shown here, the Procession of the Younger King, features the likenesses of several members of the Medici family, including Piero the Gouty and Cosimo the Elder, riding in the young king’s retinue. Gozzoli also included a self-portrait; he stands among the crowd on the left, wearing a red cap with gold lettering.

The Journey of the Magi is a famous fresco cycle housed inside the Palazzo Medici Riccardi in Florence.
The Chapel of the Magi which Benozzo di Lese, better known as Benozzo Gozzoli , frescoed, commissioned by the Medici, in 1459.
A small masterpiece, because the chapel is modest in size. Large, because the frescoes depicting the Journey of the Magi and the Garden of Paradise , converging on Filippo Lippi’s Adoration of the Child Jesus on the altar, demonstrate Benozzo’s mastery of mural painting technique and his refined execution in depicting landscapes and figures, intertwining sacred history, a fairytale atmosphere, and contemporary relevance, with an exceptional attention to detail already evident in an early work from 1439, such as the Madonna and Child with Angels .
The extraordinary complexity of the scenes reveals the refinement of Benozzo’s execution technique: the predominantly buon fresco painting is integrated with some details executed a secco (dry), allowing the painter to meticulously craft the precious jewels, the sumptuous fabrics, the horses’ trappings, but also the fruit-laden trees, the flower-filled meadows, the colorful plumage of the birds, and the multicolored wings of the angels.
To produce this effect of magnificence, the artist used rare and expensive materials, such as lapis lazuli for the blue backgrounds, shiny lacquers and pure gold leaves that shone in the dark, in the dim light of the candles.
On the first floor of Palazzo Medici Riccardi we find the building’s true jewel : the Chapel of the Magi, frescoed by Benozzo Gozzoli in the 15th century . It was the small private chapel of the Medici family, but it also had public significance, and here Benozzo Gozzoli, a pupil of the more famous Beato Angelico, created a splendid cycle of frescoes depicting the Procession of the Magi.
The theme of the Procession of the Magi occupies three of the walls of the Chapel, those facing east, south and west, with The Journey of the Magi in the largest room, and The Shepherds’ Vigil Awaiting the Announcement above the doors of the sacristies.
The main room of the chapel illustrates the Journey of the Magi , a sacred subject, proposed by Benozzo Gozzoli with elegance and pomp, which emerge above all in the representation of the characters, painted with sumptuous clothes and regal finishes.
Indeed, Gozzoli’s frescoes recall Flemish paintings and tapestries in their atmosphere and colors and are undoubtedly the artist’s most accomplished and famous work. Gozzoli’s work fuses art, history, and public celebration .
The Chapel of the Magi in Palazzo Medici Riccardi is one of the most evocative spaces of the Florentine Renaissance, an absolutely fascinating little gem.
