Description of the artwork

Almond Branch in Blossom Van Gogh is part of a group of several paintings of almond trees in blossom made in the south of France between 1888 and 1890 by Vincent van Gogh in Arles and Saint-Rémy.

The symbol of the blossoming tree was special to van Gogh. It represented awakening and hope. He was aesthetically pleasing and found joy in painting these subjects, which recall Japanese art.

In fact, these works reflect the influence of Impressionism , Divisionism and Japanese woodcuts .
In particular, Van Gogh created Almond Blossom to celebrate the birth of his nephew, son of his brother Theo.

Almond Branch in Blossom by Van Gogh

In 1888 van Gogh drew inspiration from the south of France and began the most productive period of his painting career.
It was the sun that van Gogh sought in Provence, a radiance and light that would erase detail and simplify form, reducing the world around him to the kind of motif he admired in Japanese woodcuts. Arles, he said, was “the Japan of the South.”
Here, he felt, the flattening effect of the sun. Indeed, in his paintings, he reinforced the contours of the compositions and reduced the color nuances to a few vivid contrasts. Pairs of complementary colors such as the red and green of the plants , the intertwined reflections of orange and blue in the clouds that animate the turquoise sky. When van Gogh arrived in Arles in March 1888, the fruit trees in the orchards were about to blossom. The blossoms of apricot, peach and plum trees inspired him, and within a month he had created fourteen paintings of fruit trees in bloom. In fact, excited by the subject, van Gogh painted without stopping, completing the paintings in a single day. In a letter to Theo he wrote
“I’ll have to look for something new, the orchards are almost finished blooming now.”

The influence of Japonism

Van Gogh’s work reflects his interest in Japanese prints.
Van Gogh used the term Japonaiserie (Japonism) to express this influence; he collected hundreds of Japanese prints and compared the works of great Japanese artists, such as Hiroshige, to those of Rembrandt, Hals and Vermeer.

Hiroshige was one of the last great masters of the Japanese genre called ukiyo-e . Van Gogh integrated some of the technical aspects of ukiyo-e into his work, as evidenced by his two 1887 tributes to Hiroshige.

The Japanese paintings represent Van Gogh’s search for serenity, which he describes in a letter.

“Having as much peace of mind as possible, even if you know little, certainly nothing, is perhaps a better remedy for all illnesses than all the things sold in the pharmacy.”

Almond blossom branch in a glass

Van Gogh’s bright almond blossom branch in a glass embodies Japanese aesthetic values.
A broken twig is nestled in a simple glass.
The sprig is highlighted by a red line along the beige wall and a sumptuous empty space. There is no formal decorative intent in this painting; moreover, Van Gogh’s name, also in bright red, hovers above a sprig in the upper left as if it were a symbol of hope.

In this work, Van Gogh transformed the still life with the help of these values. Indeed, this still life recalls the Japanese art of flower arrangement, ikebana, in its simplicity and evoked hope, as well as in its formal use of empty space.

The work of the Almond Blossom Branch in a Glass with a Book is contemporary.
In mid-March 1888 van Gogh writes about the weather and that the almond trees are coming into full bloom

“The weather here is changeable, often windy with turbulent skies, but the almond trees are starting to blossom everywhere.”

In his flowering trees, Vincent achieved a sense of spontaneity, freeing himself from the rigorous approach he had adopted in Paris. In these works, Vincent used the light, broken strokes of Impressionism and the splashes of color of Divisionism for a sparkling surface effect.
