The Osterreichische Galerie Belvedere in Vienna is one of the most sumptuous and beautiful palaces in Europe.
The baroque castle houses one of the finest collections of artworks in Austria with the main works of Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka.
In fact, Prince Eugene of Savoy, a great lover of art, had this magnificent summer residence built by Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt.
For this reason, built between 1714 and 1722, it consists of two palaces connected by a splendid garden with statues, fountains, pools and sumptuous staircases: the Lower Belvedere, the Prince’s summer residence, and the Upper Belvedere.
From the Upper Belvedere there is an excellent view over the whole of Vienna, inside it features an art collection ranging from the Middle Ages to the present day. Inside there are internationally renowned works such as the largest collection in the world of paintings by Gustav Klimt.
Finally, there are enormous masterpieces by Schiele and Kokoschka as well as a collection dedicated to French Impressionism. A journey through European art of the nineteenth century.
The heart of the Belvedere collection is made up of 24 paintings by Gustav Klimt, with his golden representations of The Kiss by Klimt.
In 2018 the permanent exhibition of the Upper Belvedere was completely reorganized: in seven thematic rooms distributed over three levels, a total of 420 works are exhibited.
The visit begins with the theme of the history of the Belvedere. In the following rooms, artworks from the Middle Ages, the Baroque, Classicism and the Romantic art period are displayed.
