• History of LACMA Los Angeles

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art, known worldwide as LACMA, is an important and iconic art museum located near the city of Los Angeles.

Before becoming an independent museum, LACMA was part of the Los Angeles Museum of History, Science and Art, founded in 1910.
It was later established as a museum in 1961 and became one of the leading museums for the number of artworks and the beauty of its pavilions.

This majestic museum attracts nearly a million visitors every year and houses more than 150,000 works spanning art history from antiquity to the present day.

  • Collections at LACMA Los Angeles

LACMA’s vast collections are divided into departments.
Modern art features works by Picasso, Magritte, Degas, Klee, Kandinsky. Galleries include Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Islamic, and American art. Impressionists and Post-Impressionists are well represented with Monet, Degas, Cézanne, and Renoir. Special mention goes to Renoir, for whom LACMA dedicates a special exhibition.

The Pierre-Auguste Renoir collection offers a fresh and fascinating perspective on the French master’s work.
Instead of focusing on the famous Impressionist works that made him known worldwide, the exhibition explores the extraordinary and often overlooked pieces he produced in the last thirty years of his life.

  • Renoir at LACMA: Beyond Impressionism

A particularly moving episode testifies to Renoir’s absolute dedication to his art. In 1912, severely paralyzed by rheumatoid arthritis, the painter made one last attempt to walk. After a few steps, he uttered words that reveal his complete devotion to art:

To walk I would need all my willpower, and I would have none left to paint. If I have to choose between walking and painting, I much prefer to paint.

This unwavering determination allowed Renoir to continue creating masterpieces until the last days of his life.
Thus, we decided to honor this great artist with a beautiful puzzle depicting one of the most well-known and elaborate studies of Impressionist art: Two Girls Reading.
