• History of the Lenbachhaus, Bavarian Art Museum

The Lenbachhaus, Art Museum of Munich, is an elegant villa built at the end of the 19th century as the residence of the “painter-prince” Franz von Lenbach.

Thus, Franz von Lenbach transformed the Lenbachhaus into a representative place for figures of culture and politics visiting Munich.

However, after the death of the “painter-prince” a few years after the completion of the Lenbachhaus, the villa was transferred to the City of Munich.
The cultural house, now open to the public, became a center for artistic learning and cultural stimulation.

  • Lenbachhaus and Abstract Art

Inside the halls of the Lenbachhaus, Art Museum of Munich, there are works by painters who stayed in Munich from the 19th to the 20th century. In fact, in 1957, the partner of Vasilij Kandinsky donated to the museum her private collection of the artist’s paintings, mainly from the Munich and Murnau periods.

From this donation, the villa in Munich became a meeting center for abstract art. In its halls, you can find paintings by Paul Klee and Franz Marc, who, together with Kandinsky, laid the foundations of contemporary art.
