The Hakone Museum Japan is a park where art and nature merge.
It is located in Japan, nestled among the eponymous Hakone mountains, in the Ashigarashimo district, and is part of Kanagawa Prefecture.
Near Tokyo, the Hakone exhibition area is a frequent tourist destination due to the views of Mount Fuji, the typical hot spring facilities called onsen, and the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park.
In the area, it is also possible to witness the volcanic phenomena of the “Great Boiling Valley” and relax at the temple located on the shores of Lake Ashi.
Spanning 70,000 square meters, it houses an incredible number of artworks in complete harmony with the surrounding nature.
The museum was inaugurated in 1969 and is the first of its kind in the Japanese archipelago.
It is a place designed for strolling immersed in nature.
The museum gardens are open in all seasons, making every visit unique.
Inside, visitors can see 120 works by contemporary sculptors, scattered outdoors, embedded in an open-air path.
The sculptors are both Japanese and foreign, and the works are placed outdoors so that visitors can experience them up close and enjoy a 360-degree experience.
Being exposed to the elements, the sculptures can evoke different emotions depending on the weather.
The summer sunlight, the backdrop of spring flowers, the autumn mists, and winter rain are all part of the artistic performance offered by the Hakone exhibition.
Among the most loved areas of the extensive art display is the pavilion dedicated to Pablo Picasso.
In particular, a group of 188 ceramic works purchased by Picasso’s daughter, Maya, testify to the artist’s effort to work with various materials to express his aesthetic philosophy.
Other adjacent rooms display Modigliani, Henry Moore, Constantin Brancusi.
Walking among the bronze sculpture ‘Mother and Child’ by Henry Moore and ‘Meddling Old Lady’ by Medardo Rosso, visitors can also enjoy the flowing stream and relax in front of a pond with carp.
