The Pompeii puzzle, The Offering Girl, is Pompeian red. This color is a naturally occurring red ochre, composed of iron oxide. In ancient Rome, it was known as sinopsis, after the city of Sinope, where, according to Pliny, it was first discovered.
What better puzzle than this to honor the month dressed in red?
If Christmas is an ancient tradition, the Pompeii frescoes are a 2,000-year-old story that allows you to relive the daily scenes that were experienced in Pompeii before the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD that buried the city.
This is a puzzle of classical Roman painting. We find figures depicted, partly real , partly mythological , gathered in groups arranged against the red of the panels, between the pilasters. These numerous monumental, life-size figures represent an initiation rite in the Villa of the Mysteries.
The scene we find in our free adult puzzle , the 1500-piece puzzle from the Italian brand Impronte Edizioni, involves a boy reading the procedures to follow, a young girl holding a tray with offerings, and moving towards a group of women engaged in a purification ritual with water.
This is just one of ten depictions from the 1st century BC. They are the work of an anonymous local artist, who worked on all the walls of the room, painting life-size figures, with a technique called megalographia , strongly inspired by Greek painting.
Even today, both the subject and the true meaning of the fresco remain uncertain. We know for certain that it is a series of sequences, ten in fact, which could depict wedding preparations or moments of a ritual, such as the initiation of a bride into the god Dionysus.
