Description of the artwork

The story of Paolo and Francesca and their impossible lovers has always inspired art and poetry.

In fact, Paolo Malatesta and Francesca da Polenta are two figures of lovers who have become part of the popular sentimental imagination, despite originating from secondary events in Italian history.

The historical story of the opera Francesca da Rimini

During their lifetime, Paolo and Francesca were siblings-in-law. Francesca was married to Gianciotto , Paolo’s brother. It was Gianciotto who, by his own decree, ordered Francesca’s death.

The tragic love story of Paolo and Francesca has been retold many times, especially in literature. Boccaccio himself tells us that the marriage between Gianciotto and Francesca da Polenta was based on a terrible misunderstanding, encouraged if not engineered by the leaders of the two families.
In fact, the two families, the da Polenta from Ravenna and the Malatesta from Rimini , were among the most renowned in Romagna.
After a series of external clashes and internal political instability, they decided to form an alliance by marrying their daughter and son.
Francesca, Boccaccio claims, was led to believe that she would marry the handsome and elegant Paolo.

In reality, according to the actual historical documentation of the events, there is little that can be truly verified: the personal details of the protagonists and their lineage. It seems, in fact, that the alliance between the two families was so advantageous to both, thanks to complementary political and dynastic strategies, that the blood relationship became a fact to be silenced as quickly as possible.
For example, it is not known where the double homicide actually took place.
Some hypotheses indicate the Gradara Castle , others the Malatesta Fortress of Santarcangelo di Romagna , but these are only conjectures.

Francesca from Rimini

Francesca da Rimini , painted in 1837 by William Dyce, is a work now exhibited at the National Gallery of Scotland. Dyce recognized it as one of the finest paintings he produced in Edinburgh.

The subject was inspired by the star-crossed lovers described by Dante in his epic poem “The Inferno of the Divine Comedy ”.
Francesca, married to an elderly and deformed husband, Gianciotto, met his younger brother Paolo and they fell in love. Gianciotto surprised the lovers and killed them.

Gianciotto was originally included in Dyce’s composition.
A hint of the tragic outcome is still dramatically suggested by the presence of Gianciotto’s embodied hand on the left, a fortuitous result of the canvas being restored to remove the damage in 1882.

The moon is depicted in the upper right, a fatal witness to the lovers’ murder. The shepherd’s star, the planet Venus, is visible near the moon, adding to the symbolism of the event.

The Scottish painter: William Dyce

William Dyce was born in Scotland on 19 September 1806 .
He was a very important scholar and polymath. He is also probably the best-known Scottish painter and a pioneer of state art education in Great Britain.

Dyce studied at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh and the Royal Academy in London. One of the first British students of early Italian Renaissance painting, he visited Italy in 1825 and 1827–28, meeting a group of young German painters, the Nazarenes, in Rome.

He exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy , being elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1844 and an Academician in 1848. From 1830 to 1837 in Edinburgh, he painted portraits for a living. But his Italian studies led him to anticipate the English Pre-Raphaelites in a different pictorial research, recalling 14th- and 15th-century Italian art.

Furthermore, in 1838 Dyce created the Madonna and Child .
This picture depicts Dyce as a strict follower of the Pre-Raphaelite school and the scene portrayed is based on Raphael’s Madonna and Child which was the main subject of the early 1500s.

Dyce and the work “Man of Sorrows”

Completed in 1860 this painting is one of the pair with David in the Wilderness .

Dyce’s work Man of Sorrows shows the sufferings of Jesus as he distances himself from the earthly, everyday world and devotes himself to the preparations for his spiritual trials.

Rather than showing any Holy Land, he presented here a rocky landscape of the Scottish Highlands to offer a key to the free interpretation of believers, letting all his love for research and scientific study shine through, to accept new terms of geology and understanding of science.
