Edutainment: educational entertainment

The term Edutainment comes from the union of the English words Education and Entertainment, and translated into Italian, it is realized by the sum of the adjectives educational and entertainment.
Edutainment is essentially a form of entertainment aimed at learning.

Edutainment meaning:

The concept of Edutainment , initially applied to all forms of communication aimed at educational purposes, was subsequently extended to all those forms of communication that pursue educational purposes through fun and productive activities.
For these reasons, all activities similar to Edutainment can be defined as educational entertainment activities, capable of educating a person through playful forms, such as video games, music, websites, and other recreational activities in general.

Edutainment learning can be implemented in numerous contexts and is generally very useful because by its very nature it encourages, incentivizes and increases motivation and involvement, increasing the concentration of the subjects involved.

Cultural Edutainment

Edutainment is currently considered a new frontier in education because, in many cases, it has enabled direct dialogue between the audience and important or difficult-to-understand, often highly specialized, topics such as history, art, and cultural heritage. However, this technique has also achieved effective results, thanks to the use of learning techniques based on fun and entertainment, delivered in a light-hearted and engaging manner.
Educational entertainment through Edutainment , applied to art and cultural heritage such as paintings, sculptures, monuments, museums (Museum Edutainment), is able to establish a simple and direct experience that is easy to enjoy for adults and children.

Features of products intended for Edutainment

Naturally, in order to achieve the learning objective, products designed and intended for Edutainment must possess certain requirements, namely, being able to communicate something in a simple and direct way but above all in an entertaining way.
Based on this statement, one might think that this educational form is aimed specifically at children, but in reality this is not the case. Just consider that Edutainment is aimed at many age groups and can be proposed in various basic, intermediate, or advanced formats to be adapted for use in preschool, school, or out-of-school audiences, i.e., adults.

Knowledge through Edutainment

For adult audiences, Edutainment is able to offer a series of in-depth studies on general culture topics, with the aim of specifically stimulating interest through a visual experience in direct contact with the object.
Adult users represent the largest target audience for Edutainment because they demonstrate a greater need for active participation in order to achieve the learning objective. To maximize the benefits of Edutainment, the viewer must become an actor and participate actively in achieving the goal.

Using puzzles in edutainment

One of the activities widely proposed for educational entertainment purposes is puzzle making, an eternally trendy game suitable for adults and children and available in multiple difficulty levels.

The puzzle is a logic game, which has the innate ability to stimulate the subject’s concentration and train the mind and exercise patience.
The use of historical, cultural, and pictorial subjects in the graphic structure of the puzzle activates the Edutainment process in the person preparing to put together the puzzle, and the benefits obtained will be numerous because during the composition a mechanism of mental action and observation/learning will be activated and at the same time one will be able to enjoy an anti-stress effect linked to the cultivation of a creative and relaxing hobby.

In this specific case, the educational goal is achieved through the study of the puzzle’s subject, while the compositional activity will consolidate learning and stimulate numerous functions, encouraging the development of highly useful concepts such as order, self-confidence, endurance, and patience.
Finally, solving a puzzle will give a pleasant feeling of accomplishment, which materializes in the recomposition of the image.

The puzzle is not necessarily a game to be played alone but can be shared with other people, thus also encouraging collaboration and sharing.
