Description of the artwork

Keith was born to Joan and Allen Haring on May 4, 1958 , and his artistic inclinations were evident from an early age.

My father made cartoons. Since I was little, I made cartoons, creating characters and stories. In my mind, however, there was a separation between comics and being an “artist.”

Art continued to be a central interest throughout Keith’s experimental and somewhat rebellious adolescence. Through books and museum visits, he began to develop an awareness of modern art.

In 1976, Keith hitchhiked across the country, stopping along the way to check out other art programs. He was enthusiastic enough about finding his artistic role models and showing off his work to begin considering his next steps as an artist.

Keith Haring is a key member of a group of New York- based avant-garde artists who helped redefine the boundaries of modern art in the 1980s.

Haring engaged with a variety of techniques, such as drawing, painting, body art and graffiti, producing monumental public works that helped bring street art recognition and its entry into museums.

His most recurring subjects include dancing human figures, crawling babies, barking dogs, flying saucers, pyramids, heart motifs, and other familiar elements.

Many of Haring’s human subjects can be seen performing specific hip-hop and break-dance moves typical of New York counterculture. Indeed, head turns, the so-called “electric boogie,” which involved dancers standing and moving their hands and bodies in a robot-like manner, and other moves performed closer to the floor, involving thrusting bodies balanced on one hand, are steps frequently depicted in Haring’s work. One of the works that best exemplifies the style and themes of Haring’s production is Free South Africa, 1985, with fluorescent colors and thick, black lines modeled in silhouette to create dancing figures.

Haring's art

The artistic trends in New York in the 1980s provided Haring with a vibrant framework for developing his own artistic practice.
His street art works, which he began creating in 1982, include white chalk drawings on sheets of black paper used to cover old advertisements and other surfaces in New York City subway stations.

Haring’s artistic vision was influenced by Robert Henri’s 1923 manifesto The Art Spirit , which advocated creative freedom and the right to self-expression as the primary driving forces in an artist’s work.

These ideas are also evident in Haring’s lifelong commitment to creating truly public art that was a direct, unmediated expression of his feelings, easily understood by the public.

Haring surrounds the outlines of his figures with thick, lightning-like strokes that emphasize the dancers’ movement and physical interactions, which always occur on a single plane in a completely two-dimensional space.

His figures engage in intricate exchanges and gestures, with bent and intertwined limbs fashioned into angular patterns also reminiscent of ancient Egyptian art . In these works, human bodies are densely arranged in rhythmic compositions, creating an overall visual effect of abstract surfaces.

The mural of Pisa

The idea of creating a mural in Pisa came by chance when a young student from Pisa met Haring on the streets of New York.
The theme is that of peace and harmony in the world , which is interpreted through the connections and divisions between the 30 figures which, like a Keith Haring puzzle, occupy 180 square metres of the south wall of the church of Sant’Antonio.

“Tuttomondo” Peace by Keith Haring

Each figure represents a different aspect of world peace: the “human” scissors are the image of solidarity between Man and Man in defeating the snake, which is already devouring the head of the figure next to him.

Furthermore, the woman with a child in her arms represents motherhood while the two men holding the dolphin refer to man’s relationship with nature.

This is one of the very few outdoor public works created by Haring for a permanent exhibition, not ephemeral and intended to be used only as part of a series of temporary mass communications.
In fact, it took him longer to produce it, a full week , than it took him a day or two to paint most of his other murals.
On the first day, working alone and without preparatory sketches , Haring drew the black outline.

The 30 figures in the mural evoke Haring’s characteristic vitality and his incessant creative energy that allowed him to create and leave behind this hymn to life only a few months before his death from AIDS.

The title of the mural is Tuttomondo , a word that sums up the artist’s constant research in interaction with the public.
