  • Curiosities About the Life of Mordillo

Mordillo was born in 1932 in a neighborhood of Buenos Aires called Villa Pueyrredón and died on June 30, 2019 at the age of 86 on the island of Mallorca, in Spain.

He was the son of Spanish parents and from an early age he admired the drawings of Walt Disney and was fascinated by the world of cartoons.

During his childhood, spent in the poor neighborhood of Villa Pueyrredón, his passions were playing soccer in the street and sitting down to draw at the kitchen table of his home.

Mordillo began his artistic career in his homeland, where he mainly devoted himself to illustrating children’s books and advertising design, until in 1963 he moved to Paris.

  • Life in Paris

In this capital he began publishing cartoons enhanced by the use of color. Because he did not master the French language well, he chose not to let his characters speak. This absence of text ended up characterizing his entire production.

His collaborations with magazines such as Lui, Paris-Match, Marie-Claire, etc., allowed him to achieve great international fame.

The story of Mordillo is that of a person who throughout his life never stopped following his passion for drawing, developing his talent from childhood and continuing to create even in the final days of his life.
We like to remember this beautiful quote of his:

“I work because I hope that with my work I can contribute, even if only in a small way, I realize, to creating a better world.”

  • Mordillo’s Illustration

Mordillo became famous for his humorous cartoons, his animated strips and the many illustrations printed on books, diaries, notebooks, greeting cards, posters and puzzles, with which children of the 1980s generation grew up.

Among his most famous drawings we find those dedicated to sports, especially soccer and golf, the irreverent panels about romantic relationships and those centered on jungle animals, including the unforgettable giraffes.

The distinctive and recognizable style of Mordillo and his gentle humor appealed both to children and to adults. In fact the characters that populate his imagination are funny chubby little men with enormous round noses, very white in a colorful world, who to express themselves do not use words but rely on amusing gestures, inevitably capturing attention and imagination.

We see them moving in large urban spaces, among skyscrapers or on soccer or golf fields, or immersed in nature, among mountains, in deep forests or on deserted islets, caught in romantic, sporting, poetic, hilarious or surreal situations.

  • Awards Received by Mordillo

The list of awards and distinctions he received is endless.

    The most important are the Phoenix of Humor in 1973; the Yellow Kid (Italy, 1974); the Nakanoki (Tokyo, 1977); Cartoonist of the Year (Canada, 1977);

Golden Prize of San Remo (Italy, 1978 and 1983); the silver medal at the V Biennale of Tolentino (Italy); the silver medal at the First Humorous Drawing Festival of Sarajevo (Serbia); and the gold medal of the Association of Argentine Illustrators.

In 2002 he was also appointed professor at the University of Alcalá.

We like to conclude with this thought: who knows what cartoon Guillermo Mordillo might be drawing now, in the presence of death.
