• Puzzle Frida: a life between art and illness

Frida was born in 1907 at the Casa Azul de Coyoacán, a suburb of Mexico City.

In her stories, however, she liked to claim she was born in 1910, the year of the Mexican Revolution. A revolution that in her works becomes color: red is the shade that appears most often in her paintings; a hymn to joy and life, elements also characterizing her last work “Viva la vida“, a still life composed of watermelons dominated by bright red.
A hymn to life that for Frida Kahlo also becomes suffering and pain.
Affected by spina bifida from birth, at the age of 17 she was involved in a terrible bus accident.

  • Convalescence

It was precisely during convalescence and bed rest that Frida began painting. The first period, the period of discovery, is characterized by a series of self-portraits that the painter was able to create thanks to a mirror attached to the ceiling.

When she was able to walk again, she brought her paintings to the master Diego Rivera, who was so struck by her modern style and innate skills that he introduced her to the Mexican political and cultural scene.

Between the two, a long and tormented love was born: a marriage marked by Diego Rivera’s constant infidelities, to which, after years of enduring, Frida Kahlo responded in the same way.
But when he later cheated on her with her sister, the Mexican artist ended their marriage.

  • Frida’s style: a naive art

Frida developed a folkloric and naive style very close to primitivism, to explore her country’s cultural heritage, the consequences of post-colonialism, the role of women in society, and her own identity. She represents events and places from her life blending reality and fantasy, which is why she is often considered an exponent of surrealism and magical realism.

They thought I was a surrealist, but I wasn’t. I never painted dreams. I painted my reality.”

After telling you a bit about Frida’s life, we want to share with you our top 5 of her works that we love the most:

    • The Broken Column

  • Frida Kahlo dies on July 13, 1954

The last words she wrote in her diary were: “I eagerly await my departure. And I hope never to return”.
The only thing that surely allowed her to survive such vicissitudes was art; she herself said:
“I am not sick, I am broken. But as long as I can paint I am happy to be alive”.
