The plot of the fable "The Wolf and the Lamb"

A hungry wolf was wandering through the forest looking for something to eat and so he came to a stream of clear water that flowed from a hill.
He stopped on the hill and saw, further down, a newly born white lamb, quenching its thirst at the stream.
His mouth immediately watered, because that little lamb was plump and well-fed.
He was about to lunge at him and devour him, especially since the lamb was alone and there were no dogs or shepherds nearby; but then he thought better of it. He knew he had a bad reputation, he knew he was considered arrogant and ferocious.
He wanted to eat the lamb, yes: but he had to first find a pretext that would put the lamb in the wrong and him in the right.

So he began to drink the water, then lifted his dripping muzzle from the stream and looked at the little lamb with fierce eyes.
You’re rude! ” he howled. “You deserve a lesson. “ Why do you dirty the water I have to drink with your tongue?
The little lamb also raised his muzzle and looked at the wolf. He had never seen him, though he had heard so much about him; but in his innocence, he believed that everyone was as good as he was.
“Excuse me, Mr. Wolf,” he replied politely. “Mind you, you’re wrong. I can’t.”
dirty your water, because first it passes through your lips and then reaches mine .”
The wolf growled in annoyance; but the truth was too obvious to argue otherwise. He pretended to drink again, and meanwhile pondered some other excuse. Finally, he thought he’d found it.
I know very well, ” he said, approaching threateningly, “that you have spoken badly of me .”
When? ” asked the little lamb, beginning to worry. I don’t know you, and I saw you today for the first time. How and when could I have spoken badly of you?
Yet I know you did. It was exactly a year ago. “. The little lamb sighed with relief: “ Mr. Wolf, you have been misinformed: I wasn’t even born yet a year ago!
The wolf bit his tongue in annoyance, but he was determined to persist.
“I don’t believe what you say,” he said abruptly. “And I don’t care whether it was you or not. It was certainly someone in your family: in fact, I know you have a brother.

But Mr. Wolf! ” protested the little lamb hotly. “ I assure you, you are wrong: none of my brothers could speak ill of you, because I have no brothers.
He looked at the wolf with his clear eyes, and waited full of hope that the great beast would calm down and go away calmly and confidently. But the wolf, even angrier than before, muttered, “ You have no brothers, ” as he came ever closer. Well, if it wasn’t your brother, it was certainly your father. He offended me, and it’s only right that I take revenge. And stop contradicting me: in fact, the wisest thing I can do is to never let you speak again.

And in fact the poor little lamb could no longer present his just reasons, because the wolf swallowed him in one bite.
In fact, bullies always want to win, even, and above all, when they are in the wrong.

The Wolf and the Lamb Puzzle for 4-Year-Olds

Like all fables, and especially Aesop’s fables, this story also has a moral.

The wolf is a predator and the lamb is prey. The wolf could have devoured the tender animal without even speaking to it, but instead he looked for a pretext, believing he could gain the upper hand verbally as well as physically.
In reality, the lamb was able to defend himself well, also because he could not be accused of anything, but this did not help him save his skin.

The fable aims to teach us that against those who choose to inflict harm, there is no just defense. This harsh and cynical moral, typical of ancient fables, is however reversed in Trilussa’s version.
In fact, for the witty Roman poet, an author who usually wrote in Roman dialect, the wolf embodies the type of the treacherous one but unfortunately for him, in an amusing fable in verse, the lamb does not allow himself to be tricked.

This could be an interesting alternative ending to tell and imitate. Indeed, with intelligent and patient conduct, one can get out of trouble even in the presence of cunning and dangerous people without resorting to violence.
